Texas nonprofit honors first responders during 'Memorial May'

Fallen members of the military, firefighters, police officers, veterans and their families are being honored this month through nationwide events sponsored by the Dallas-based nonprofit Carry The Load.

Stephen Holley, cofounder of the group, said they work to put the meaning of Memorial Day back into observances. During "Memorial May," some 75 Carry The Load walks are taking place across Texas and the country, giving loved ones an opportunity to reflect.

"That's the beautiful part of our event," Holley explained. "It's kind of open to interpretation of how you want to participate, whether it's a physical backpack or a lot of people bring pictures of loved ones who made that ultimate sacrifice."

The observances will culminate with an event at Reverchon Park in Dallas May 24-25.

Throughout the year, Carry The Load raises money for organizations helping first responders with counseling and mental health support, suicide prevention, service dogs and job placements. Holley added their goal is to actively connect Americans to the people who have sacrificed so much.

"I wanted Memorial Day to be more than just backyard barbecue and a three-day weekend to start the summers," Holley emphasized. "There was a small group of primarily veterans that wanted to do this, needed to do this, but our growth has been fueled by the 99% (who) hasn't served."

Funds are also used to assist organizations providing scholarships for children of the fallen. Holley noted when they started the movement, he did not know how large it would grow and what the effects would be.

"It started in 2011 with about 500 people," Holley recounted. "I think we raised about $100,000 that year and gave it away. We're going into our 15th anniversary this year. We've had 400,000 people participate with us over the last 15 years, and we've raised north of $50 million."
