Europe shows itself to the online world
The San Antonio News.Net Friday 21st November, 2008
The European Union has launched a free online library which gives multilingual access to two million digitized books and other items of cultural significance.
The Europeana site (www.europeana.eu) is said to offer a journey through time and across European borders.
The site connects, through interactive pages and tools, materials held in over 1,000 institutions in the 27 EU states.
Soon after its launch the website froze, its servers overwhelmed by volume of 10 million hits an hour.
The European Commission is now in talks with different companies and institutions to find ways of adding copyright material to its stock.
