UN chief in Myanmar – hoping to meet Aung San Suu Kyi
The San Antonio News.Net Friday 3rd July, 2009
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has arrived in Myanmar to discuss with the ruling military government the release of its political prisoners.
The UN chief has said he will push for the release of all political prisoners in Burma and urge the country's leaders to include all parties in the political process prior to the 2010 elections.
Mr Ban has flown to the administrative capital of Naypyitaw, coinciding with the resumption of the trial of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
On his arrival, the court postponed the trial until July 10th.
Aung San Suu Kyi has charged with violating the terms of her house arrest and is facing a five-year prison term.
While Ban Ki-moon is expected to meet with the country's top military leaders, including Senior General Than Shwe, during his mission, it has not been confirmed that he will be able to meet Aung San Suu Kyi. Email this story to a friend
